Four Robbers Routine
The Effect: The magician puts four jacks on top of the deck and then in plain view slides three of the four jacks into different parts of the deck. He then uses the fourth jack to call the other jacks to the top of the deck by tapping on it. All four jacks resurface at the top of the deck. No gimmicks this can be performed with a borrowed deck of cards.
The Presentation: Magician holds deck in his left hand and in his right hand he holds a fan of four jacks
. His Patter; The Four Jacks represent four robbers and the deck represents a rich man’s house. The robbers make a plan to rob the rich man’s house. So they all meet on the roof of the house.
At that time the magician places all four jacks on the top of the deck.
The Story continues: The first robber (jack) goes to the basement to steal all the art.
The magician visibly slides the first jack into the deck towards the bottom of the deck.
Then the magician continues his story, the next robber goes to the first floor to steal the silver.
The magician then slides the next card into the middle of the deck.
The Story continues: The next robber goes to the second floor to steal all the jewelry.
The magician slides the third card into the top third of the deck.
Story continues: The last Robber stands guard on top of the roof.
The magician holds the fourth Jack facing the audience perpendicular to the deck like it’s standing on top of the deck.
Story continues: Suddenly the robber sees the cops and shouts a warning to the other three robbers. Uh oh here come the cops.
The magician taps the jack three times on top of the deck, then the magician draws the three other jacks off the top of the deck to the amazement and applause of the audience.
The secret and setup: The secret is in the fan of the four jacks. Instead of a regular fan where you would have one jack successively on top of the next one, you take one of the middle jacks and slide it behind the other three. You hide three any other cards behind that jack, so that when you close the fan and lay the cards on top of the deck, the three odd cards are on the very top of the four jacks. Once you do that the rest is very simple. Each time you slide a card into the deck representing one of the four robbers first the basement the first floor and the second floor you are actually sliding each of the three odd cards into the deck and you are left with four jacks on top of the deck. When you tell the audience that the fourth robber stands on top of the roof you are actually picking up the first jack and the other three are directly under on the top of the deck. The rest is a little showmanship to make it look amazing.
Hint: It’s good to use other face cards like kings or queens as your odd cards, just in case you flash the card as you slide it into the deck. Also as you put the jacks on top of the deck slightly raise the deck to meet the four jacks so the audience can’t see how thick the packet is with seven cards instead of four cards like you make them believe. As you slide each card into the deck tip the end of the deck down slightly to keep from flashing what the card is so the audience still believes that it is a jack going to the middle of the deck each of the three times.
